The Colorado Rapids

Postby arisarice on Mon Jul 07, 2008 12:51 pm

Having never seen a soccer game, either live or on TV prior to July 4, 2008, our family can now proudly proclaim that we are, and will be soccer fans from this day forth. My husband, four children and I, had an absolute blast at the Fourth of July Colorado Rapid's game, where they defeated New York Red Bulls 4 to 0. My eight-year-old son cheered until his voice gave out and he can't wait until his soccer season begins, when I guess I'll finally get to live up to the title of an "American soccer mom."

My three and five-year-olds screamed and cheered with the crowd when Colorado scored, and danced their little hearts out when the music jammed, trying to draw the attention of the camera men to get their turn on the big screen. Even my one-year-old squealed and clapped with delight when she saw all the mascots from every college and professional sport in Colorado play soccer during half-time entertainment.

As for my husband and I, we were in awe of the strength and speed of the athletes, and we finally get why the rest of the world is so crazy about this sport. We were especially impressed with the sheer dedication of the goalkeeper who seemed to sacrifice any body part to block the ball from entering our goal. He is a true athlete and I believe he could hold his own against any linebacker.

Following the game, we enjoyed a live band, as thousands of fans descended to the field. Once everyone was settled, we witnessed the most spectacular and majestic fireworks display I had ever seen, set to patriotic music that gave me goosebumps.

By the time we left Dick's Sporting Goods Stadium, I realized two things: One was that this soccer game had enough entertainment for the whole family at every age level. And two, the entertainment was appropriate for the whole family. No half-naked cheerleaders shaking their business like no body's business, no drunken fans swearing or fighting, just clean entertainment, and pure joy from the excitement and momentum of the game. In the end, as our exhausted children piled into our minivan, I wondered why we had not done this sooner. Go Rapids!

Colorado Rapids and Fireworks - July 4, 2008

Postby AMJNBJ on Mon Jul 07, 2008 5:10 pm

Being a soccer family, we were thrilled to have tickets to the The Colorado Rapids Soccer and Fireworks festivities for the 4th of July. Activities began at 5 pm with food, music and free activities for the entire family. There were jumpy castles, a 3v3 blow up soccer field and obstacle courses to maneuver. Crafts, face painting and caricature drawings all had lines of people eager to participate. My kids, ages 9 and 4, made patriotic sun catchers while listening to live music on the local stage. There were plenty of food and beverage stands available to meet every palates need.

The game began at 7:30 with Opie Gone Bad lead singer belting out the National Anthem, followed by a 4 jet flyover that the kids - and adults - loved. The Rapids provided a great game, winning 4 to 0 to the New York Red Bulls. The kids loved the halftime showdown of the Colorado mascots playing their own soccer match. The mascots threw T-shirts to the crowd throughout the game - my son being one of the happy recipients.

The crowd set a new record of over 18,600 people in attendance. There is not a bad seat in Dick's Sporting Goods Stadium and there is plenty to eat and drink, including our favorites mini-donuts, Dippin Dots and Lemonade. We had 4 seats near the north goal - which saw lots of action. After the game ended, sections of fans were welcomed onto the field for firework viewing. While the crowd moved to the field, the band Opie Gone Bad played high energy music on the Main Stage. At 10 pm the largest firework display in Colorado began to patriotic music playing throughout the stadium. The fireworks were continuous for thirty minutes along with a video of different Colorado views and soccer highlights - with what my son called "the most fantastic fireworks he had ever seen" in his entire 9 years! It was a great evening for the entire family!

I agree that taking in a Colorado Rapids game is great fun for the whole family. My older son played soccer when he was younger and had asked about seeing a pro soccer game. My family hadn't had the opportunity to check out Dick's Sporting Goods Park yet so we headed out for Family Night to see the Rapids take on the Columbus Crew.

Unfortunately the Rapids lost but we still had a great time! My toddler loved all the mascot and the excitement. The park is beautiful with clean restrooms and a variety of concessions to satisfy your snacking urges. My boys enjoyed mini doughnuts and cotton candy during the game.

And definitely taking in a Rapids game is good clean fun for the entire family with no swearing or drunk fans. Just enthusiastic soccer fans cheering and having a great time.

It started to rain at the end of the game so we ducked out a little early but we'll definitely be back. Go Rapids!

WOW! What an exciting evening at Dick's Sporting Goods Park, watching our hometown soccer team, THE RAPIDS! I'm always impressed at how family friendly the Rapids crowd is...I was never concerned that my young children would be exposed to less than desirable behavior, either from the players themselves or the crowd in the stands. Even more impressive is the stadium, which is just beautiful...there is not a bad seat in the house.

Parking is free, but can be a bit of a trek unless you get there early. Just remember which lot you are in, and you will be in good shape!

Outside food and beverages (except for water) are not allowed, so plan accordingly. Most games start after major meals, so that is a plus, but if you do want to eat at the stadium, there is plenty to choose from!

After The Rapids proved victorious over the New York Red Bulls, Commerce City hosted one of the most spectacular fireworks displays I have ever seen. We got to watch from on the field (which was super exciting for my 8 year old soccer fan), and the show lasted at least 30 minutes!

Want to attend a game with your family? There are several home games left in the season----you can find more information on the Rapids website:

It was great day for soccer at Dick’s sporting goods park as the Colorado Rapids took on the Western Conference leading Houston Dynamo. The air was cool, for an August afternoon, as the teams kicked off and settled into the rhythm of the game. We brought three 10 year-old, soccer-playing boys, and we all got into the atmosphere as the teams’ fans bantered back and forth from opposing corners. The Rapids supporters outnumbered those of the Dynamo, but their fans were passionate and vocal. You’ll be pleasantly surprised by how intimate the stadium feels. It is one of the best venues in the country for watching a soccer game.
The players did not disappoint. From the beginning of the game, the Rapids seemed to control the pace of play and maintained greater possession than Houston. We were seated on the Rapids’ defensive end in the first half, so much of the play was going on at the opposite end; that hardly mattered since you can see the field so well from any seat inside Dick’s Sporting Goods field. At halftime, we walked around looking for food and drinks. There were so many choices from Dippin’ Dots to hot pretzels to French fries – they’ve even put in a Cantina Mexican Restaurant and a Smiling Moose deli. You can get pretty much any treat at Dick’s, but there’s none better than the mini doughnuts made right there before your eyes. With or without toppings, the doughnuts are delightful.
There was a lot of good action in the game as the two teams battled for three points in the Western conference standings. The Rapids delivered a French connection when Julien Baudet (France) headed the ball in off a corner kick from Mehdi Ballouchy (Morocco). We were thrilled that this action took place right in front of us. The Dynamo players became much more intense after the goal as they pressed for the equalizer. This made for lots of great attacks and counters. Ballouchy would later hit a brilliant volley that smashed into the cross bar and drew a collective gasp from the 11,000 spectators. In the end, the Rapids held on for the win and the three points. You could literally feel the excitement as the crowd headed to their cars. We took a walk through the team store, which is open all week long, and picked through all the cool Rapids gear. Whether you’re looking for memorabilia or a jersey to support your favorite Rapids’ player, you’ll find it here. We consider ourselves lucky to see a great sporting event at a world-class venue for such an incredible value.
