WOW. Disney does it AGAIN!!! High School Musical on ice tour was fabulous.
What a blast we had this evening. I took my daughter (9) and her friend (9) to the Denver performance at the Coliseum. How do I know they enjoyed it? Silence during the performance and mouths moving at triple the normal speed all the way home. They couldn’t stop talking about how much they loved the skating, the music, the videos, the fireworks...
"Mom, be sure and tell them (she knew I was writing my review) about the fireworks," she said as she put her head down on the pillow, a very happy little girl look on her face. [insert a sleepy, happy smiley here...]
...the dancing, the characters, the set, the lights, the EVERYTHING.
As the mom, I was impressed at how Disney wove the evening together. Beginning with a special video, sing-along and dance-along, from High School Musical 3. The cast did a great job of getting the audience excited and involved. The rest of the first half was the basics of High School Musical (the first) with a short intermission followed by HSM 2. Some of my daughter’s favorite songs were highlighted in each act (you know, the ones she sings while doing homework) with fabulous skating by the entire cast. My personal favorite moment in the show was during the first act when basketballs were dropped to the ice, simultaneously, to maybe a dozen cast members. What a surprise. Soon, I said to my daughter:
“Wow, they are dribbling on ice.”
“I know, mom. They practice that a lot.”
I liked how the show was paced with action-packed dance, well SKATE, numbers will the full cast, to single skates by several characters. The first half holding the bulk of the performance but the second half finishing more quickly for young and tired attention spans.
This was such a worthwhile evening and my daughter will not soon forget it. Disney really has a special way at capturing the attention of children and adults through all their senses. Go Wildcats!!
What I learned: No, this is not news to me but it’s always worth remembering: you simply can’t go wrong with Disney for family entertainment.
About Denver Coliseum: After a snow, a warm day and then cold temperatures, the parking lot was filled with a variety of large ponds with ice around them…so just be careful when parking and walking to the up to the front.
Despite these possible pitfalls, the arena was clean and small enough to have a good seat almost anywhere in the house. It also has one of the easiest exit plans for their parking lot. I don’t know how, but I hardly stopped on my way out through the row of parking shacks, down the road and on to I-70. A very nice end to a great evening!
