Geri, the Education Director was very kind asking my kids what their favorite dinosaur was and introduced us to Stephen, our tour guide. Stephen led a very interactive tour that is engaging for all ages while at the same time it was educational. He told my children lots of fun interesting facts. Kids are encouraged to ask lots of questions. So my kids took Stephen up on that!
All the casts are made off the real thing. They also have original fossils on display. Guests can even touch some of the original fossils. The casts above your head throughout the center give you a visual of how enormous the dinosaurs were. Most dinosaur skeletons seen in museums are actually exact replicas. This is done for safety, financial and scientific reasons.
Dinosaurs can be found in many parts of the United States. However they are particularly plentiful in certain areas of Colorado. One of the first discoveries of dinosaur skeletons in the United States occurred in March 1877, near the town of Morrison, Colorado. Most fossils at the Dinosaur Resource Center were discovered in Montana, Kansas and South Dakota, along with Colorado.
Dinosaur bones can be found in a variety of different rock formations.More often than not, the explorer finds only fragmentary remains or an isolated bone. Occasionally, a nearly complete skeleton is found.
The Dinosaur Resource Center has the largest paleontology lab in America. This lab is a working preparation, molding, casting and mounting lab that ships to museums all over the world.
My kids loved the kids’ station where they were able to create their own pictures of fossils and dig for bones. The center has open tours daily. My kids are still talking about their visit to the Dinosaur Resource Center and want to go back soon.
Fun Fact:The Dinosaur Resource Center played a major role in the production of the National Geographic movie, “Sea Monsters”.Their lab staff created nearly all of the live action props used in the movie. In all but one of the scenes, the fossils ”in the ground” were built right in the Woodland Park lab using molds from skeletons they discovered, recreating several important historical discoveries.
