Tri the Rock inspires kids to get active, help others and try their personal best. Each year, hundreds of kids swim, bike and run through The Meadows neighborhood for this fun and challenging event. Young athletes cross the finish line to the cheers of family and friends and earn the pride of a gleaming medal.
This year’s race is Sunday, May 19, at Butterfield Crossing Park and Pool, 3952 W. Butterfield Crossing Drive.
Young athletes ages 5 to 14, of all ability levels are invited. The race distances are:
Ages 5-6: 25-meter swim (one pool length), 1-kilometer bike ride (one lap around Butterfield Park) and a 500-meter run
Ages 7-10: 50-meter swim (two pool lengths, down and back), 4-kilometer bike ride and a 1-kilometer run
Ages 11-14: 100-meter swim (four pool lengths, down and back twice), 8-kilometer bike ride and a 2-kilometer run
Event fees are $45 through Friday, May 5, and $50 through Friday, May 17. The registration deadline is 10 a.m. on May 17. The local school with the most participants will get to display the traveling Tri the Rock Trophy for an entire year. The registration fee includes a T-shirt, goody bag and lunch.
Bike racks open at 6:30 a.m. The race begins at 8 a.m. However, check-in for ages 5-6 does not begin until 10:30 a.m., since the group doesn’t start until the other races have finished. Pre-race check-in is available from noon to 2 p.m. Saturday, May 18, at the Castle Rock Recreation Center, 2301 Woodlands Blvd.
Is your child excited to give the event a try for the first time? Make sure they’re prepared with a free first-timer clinic hosted from 3 to 4 p.m. Saturday, May 5 at Butterfield Crossing Park. The clinic is designed to ease the anxiety for kids and their parents, who are both encouraged to attend. The class will include a review of the race course. To ensure individualized attention, clinic space is limited, and registration is required.
In addition, a training camp will be held May 3-5 at the Miller Activity Complex. This training camp will be split into three sessions to target swim and transition practice, bike-handling skills and a triathlon run-through. Weekend training camps cost $125 and include race registration.
Please note, due to road construction around Butterfield Crossing Park, it is recommended to arrive early on race day.
